  5. 1877 -  American astronomer Asaph Hall discovers the two moons of Mars - Phobos and Deimos.

  7. 1877 -  Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli notices dark lines on Mars.  He calls them "canali," or canals.

  9. 1895 -  American astronomer Percival Lowell comes up with the theory that the channels on Mars were built by Martians.
