1672 - Jean Dominique Cassini determines the distance between Mars and Earth.
1800 - William Herschel realizes that Mars's axis tilts at nearly the same angle as Earth's axis.
1877 - American astronomer Asaph Hall discovers the two moons of Mars - Phobos and Deimos.
1877 - Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli notices dark lines on Mars. He calls them "canali," or canals.
1895 - American astronomer Percival Lowell comes up with the theory that the channels on Mars were built by Martians.
